nUb Raver Tuesday #34

This week’s edition of nUb Raver Tuesday features new songs and remixes by Chromeo, Dragonette, Lady GaGa, The Toxic Avenger, DEATH TO THE THRONE!!!!!!, Shiny Toy Guns, Designer Drugs, and more! Read previous editions –> here!

chromeo_night_by_night_300x300So far, the remixes of CHROMEO’s 2009 single Night By Night have been less than impressive. Actually, to be totally honest, they are TERRIBLE. Recent history suggests that Chromeo remixes are tough sells. There’s probably over a hundred combined mashups and remixes of Chromeo songs out there, out of which only a handful could even be considered better or as good as the original tune. One theory is that Chromeo songs are at a much slower BPM than what most electro DJ/remixers are probably accustomed to spinnin’. In general, remixing nu-disco or electrofunk songs and transforming them into club bangers is not an easy task. The end result can be ugly. Producing a watered-down electro/house remix of a Chromeo song doesn’t do anyone any good. So far, my favorite remix of Night By Night has been by San Diego’s BUBBLEGUM SCI FI , who’s quickly picking up steam in the blogosphere. You might also want to check out the edit by BOYS NOIZE, who touched up the remix by fellow German SIRIUSMO.

dragonette web2DRAGONETTE really does not get enough credit, despite the fact that their second studio album Fixin To Thrill is easily one of the best electro-pop, or better yet, dance albums from the past year, perhaps falling somewhere between the debuts from LITTLE BOOTS (Hands) and LA ROUX (self-titled). The album has impressing many, netting several singles, including the catchy title track Fixin To Thrill, in addition to Gone Too Far, Come On Be Good, Pick Up The Phone, and Easy. Like it’s 2007 predecessor Galore, it is a solid overall effort, although it is a bit front-loaded (i.e., obvious drop-off after the first half). There’s some good remixes of Pick Up The Phone available, including ones by some great producers/DJs like Brooklyn’s MR. VEGA and the prestigious RICHARD X. There have also been some decent remixes of Easy, but none better than the one by BUFFETLIBRE.

Lady-Gaga-Bad-RomanceI’m not sure if any other remix of Lady GaGa’s Bad Romance will top the one by Brooklyn’s CHEW FU, but the club banger by LA’s SKRILLEX is definitely worth noting. Skrillex’s version certainly hits much harder than the slower, electro-house version by Chew Fu. The more typical or cookie-cutter pop song Telephone, featuring Beyonce, will probably be the next single off of The Fame Monster. It has already been remixed by LA electronic group ELECTROLIGHTZ, and the end result is quite good (even if I’m not that big on the original tune). As an added bonus, check out the very latest remix of Poker Face by none other than HOSHINA ANNIVERSARY.

You’ll notice that the DIRTY NOISE edit of Escape, the banger by THE TOXIC AVENGER, sounds awfully similar to THE BLOODY BEETROOTS remix from about a year ago – in fact, you can’t really tell the difference between the two until you reach about the half-way mark. If anything, I think the Dirty Noise edit, if nothing else, reminds us that the Beetroots remix is one of the sickest bangers from the past two years.

Up to this point, Phoenix, Arizona DJ DEATH TO THE THRONE!!!!!! (that’s SIX exclamation points) has established himself with his remix bangers. But, maybe the landscape will change, assuming his latest studio production I Only Have Eyes For You is an indication of great things to come in the future. The new song is quite impressive…and chaotic…in a good, disorderly-order sort of way. If you’re expecting to hear an epic club banger, like some of his remixes, then you are in for a surprise. Frankly, I Only Have Eyes For You contains a bit of everything – from chip to glitch and electro to retro. It almost sounds like four different songs colliding together, but somehow it works.

8. Death To The Throne!!!!!! – I Only Have Eyes For You

Raise your hand if you totally forgot that SHINY TOY GUNS existed? Ok, so that’s a bit harsh. Oddly enough, the once-popular Oklahoma band produced two singles off of their much-anticipated 2008 follow-up Season of Poison. But, no one really cares about that album, right? At least that’s my logic – why else would the band release a remix album called Girls Le Disko, obviously trying to continue piggy-backing on their huge 2006 hit single. Their reps will probably be scurrying over leaked remixes on all the music blogs (including ours). With that said, here’s the remix of Starts With One by CLASSIXX from LA. ;)

9. Shiny Toy Guns – Starts With One (Classixx Remix)

And finally, New York duo DESIGNER DRUGS have a couple of new bangers out right now, including Riot and Drop Down, which was recently remixed by MENDEL. IMO, the remix is better than the original track.

10. Designer Drugs – Drop Down (Mendel Remix)

Well, this is the last NRT of 2009. Thanks for the support, and see you all in 2010!
