nUb Raver Tuesday #12
***This week’s nUb Raver Tuesday features new remixes and songs from Larry Tee, Designer Drugs, The Presets, LAZRtag, Mustard Pimp, Shinichi Osawa, and more!***
I must admit, it feels pretty good to be back behind the nUb Raver helm after a week’s absence. It was a rough semester to say the least – and to top it all off, this semester’s crunch time (i.e. finals week) seemed as brutal as ever. Don’t bother asking how I did (like you care!), because the important thing is…well…ehh, it’s over and done with
. Fortunately, I was able to entice EVAN EXEMPT to sit in for NRT #11 while I was pretending to study for finals…unfortunately, he did so well that I have been officially pink slip’d from this blog. NOT! But damn, might as well! His write-up really made me look…BAD!
. You would think that he raised the bar for future NRTs…but no. I’m too lazy
. Once again Ev, thank you for the help.

Released TODAY!!
Unfortunately…none of the above are included in this edition of NRT. Heh. The tough part I guess is picking the dozen or so songs out of the ~200 songs that I actually WILL share with you this week.

Larry Tee
1. Larry Tee – My Pussy (Mom and Dad Remix)
Speaking of NY based music, when was the last time I listened to FISCHERSPOONER??? Gosh, I bet it has only been a year, maybe less, but coming across new FS tracks felt like a serious throwback moment for me. OK…before anything…let me just say something real quick. I really don’t like how Fischerspooner is often categorized as being an electroclash group, because to me, they are more accurately described as electro-pop or synth-pop. Maybe it’s just me. But…you know…who REALLY cares, right? They’re awesome, and we all love them. In case you missed it (much like I did…until now), the duo put out a new album this year called ‘Entertainment‘, and the first single off the album was called ‘Supply & Demand.’ I came across a remix of the single, done by German DJ D.I.M., who might be better known as BOYS NOIZE’s colleague/mentor. Fischerspooner + D.I.M. – well, you know it’s going to be good. Check it!
2. Fischerspooner – Supply and Demand (D.I.M. Remix)
I kinda felt obligated to share at least one remix of the song “Kicking & Screaming” by Aussie synth-rockers THE PRESETS. I’m guessing there might have been some sort of remix contest (?), because I came across a butt-ton of remixes of the song, which BTW was the leadoff track on their 2008 release ‘Apocalypso.’ And, of course, in classic [p33]r0y fashion, I have not heard the original track…and I’m not too ashamed of it. In fact, to be TOTALLY honest with you, outside of maybe three of their songs (four could very well be a stretch), I am not so hot on The Presets in general. Don’t get me wrong, those three or four songs of theirs I do enjoy are DAMN GOOD…which might be the reason why I always feel obligated to aimlessly grab all the remixes available of their songs – most of which turn out to be pretty bad, needlessly take up HD space, and piss me off. With all that said, I wouldn’t bother sharing this particular remix by Portugal’s DJ LOVEBOAT, who we’ve seen before, if I didn’t at least personally like it. To say the least, DJ Loveboat is quite good…at least from what I’ve heard. And, his selection of remixes have been top notch – stellar, if I must say. Thus far, I would have to say that this is the best remix of “Kicking and Screaming” among the bunch (keep in mind that I haven’t heard the original song yet…hehehe I’m so bad). However, to be perfectly fair, most of the other remixes I have heard were just terrible. Perhaps you could say that they left me kicking and screaming?……sorry. [EDIT: I actually found another remix of this song by RADIO KROME, who is relatively new it seems, but hot damn!!! It's good! The crown goes to Radio Krome, I guess. Fuck this DJ Loveboat remix
. JK, but seriously, listen to Radio Krome's version on his MySpace player.]
3. The Presets – Kicking and Screaming (DJ Loveboat Toaster Remix)
I felt pretty stupid about this – but I had never heard of French electronic trio TELEPOPMUSIK until this past week. The name sounded vaguely familiar, but when I actually went to look them up and found out, among other things, that a) they have been around for more than a decade, b) have a Grammy nomination under their belt for a song that was used by Mitsubishi, and c) have songs that were used by Janet Jackson and television shows Nip Tuck and The L Word to name a few. Yup…WHO CARES? What I do care about, however, is the remix of their song “Ghost Girl” done by Italian dance/electro DJ’s BLATTA & INESHA. Ahem, BANGERR!!!
4. Télépopmusik – Ghost Girl (Blatta and Inesha Remix)
Pages: 1 2

~~~You flatter shamelessly, ‘r0y. Thank you for the props on my rendering of last week’s NRT, my friend.
The [BRUTALLY HONEST] Exempt Review:
1. Larry Tee – “My Pussy”
I thought this song was really stupid until the vocal sample unfolded to say, “You can throw [my pussy] in the air and call it ’sunshine’”, at which point I deemed the song HILARIOUSLY stupid. RDM (as opposed to ‘IDM’) props to Larry Tee!!
2. Fischerspooner – “Supply and Demand” (D.I.M. Remix)
I actually like the minimalism of the beat in the first third of the song, but it builds to an unimpressive climax of chunky, two-dimensional synth riffage that sounds like it was programmed on Fruity Loops in a couple of hours. This isn’t bad, but if you handed this vocal track to Guns-N-Bombs, 10Rapid and The Beetroots, you’d likely end up with three remixes that would leave D.I.M in the dust.
3. The Presets – Kicking and Screaming (DJ Loveboat Toaster Remix)
000|-||-|…(00|_! Not really my favorite Presets song ever, but this is nevertheless a very solid rendering. I very much like the dark, menacing beat — these hi-hats and high-end synth plucks are one of the elements that are often missing from nU rave ‘bangers’ these days, one of the reasons am so inclined toward breakz and techfunk. This music has a very definite EDGE, which signifies most of the electronic I like. A+ for Portugal’s DJ Loveboat!
4. Télépopmusik – Ghost Girl (Blatta and Inesha Remix)
This one is right up p33r0y’s alley! Nice use of creative programming — I really appreciate tracks that sound like time and care was taken in their production, even if I don’t necessarily love the music. Cool vocal line/imagery. (”GHOST GIRL” — HAHA! WTF?) The most interesting touch is the way the beat flirts with an old-skool electro break in a couple of places. I’d recommend this to any Dj who spins nU rave electro-bangers.
5. Mustard Pimp – Zombie Revenge (Straaatch Remix)
I think most of the remixes of this track sound pretty similar. But as anthemic bangers go, you really can’t lose with “Zombie Revenge”.
6. Designer Drugs – Zombies (Hot Pink Delorean Thrillernight Remix)
Haha! Props to Hot Pink Delorean on the injection of larger-than-life, vibrating rubber bass into the mix. What this track lacks in seriousness, it makes up for menacing intensity and size. “Zombie! Zombie! Zombie! Zombie! …”
7. Shinichi Osawa – Maximum Joy (Van She Remix)
I am digging the busy bass programming on this cut. I do think the blatantly unsubtle utterance of “Ecstasy” is a bit tired. (Isn’t there anything else we could talk about… like guns, or disease, or crazed hippos? — Ok, maybe that’s a bit depressing.) Still, the more I listen, the more I have to admit that this track is sonically and compositionally <—[Not a word?] superior to 90% of the nU rave music out there, and that is why I am downloading it right now, raver mindlessness aside.
8. LAZRtag – Detonate (DMNDAYS Remix)
Nice try, but the Dan Sena remix was better than the original and will be better than any remix that is ever created, ever.
(However, this DMNDAYS remix isn’t bad; it just isn’t the Dan Sena Remix.)
9. Lady Gaga – Pokerface (LAZRtag Remix)
“Yaaawwn.” Did L.G. take rapping lessons from Fergie? The original version of this song sucked, and you just can’t polish a turd. Reasonably good synth-voice selections by LAZRtag, but the musicality here is completely mundane. (Give me a MIDI keyboard and an MPC with these plug-ins and I’ll dance a ring of fire around these riffs.) D- for LAZYtag on this fizzy pop tripe.
10. Les Petits Pilous – Jolie Fille (The Bloody Beetroots Remix)
I think a huge component of the inter-continental success of the Bloody Beetroots is their ability to take their deft programming chops and package them in a way that is for easy for musically un-inclined party people understand. (I sometimes wonder if the Beetroot’s might be The Lawgiverz’ nU rave alter-egos — they both wear masks, you know. *LOL*) While this song offers little in the way of theme or climax, it is a solid banger that would fall nicely into the middle of an apt Dj set, once the mix’s energy has hit its stride. Not bad.
11. Britney Spears – Circus (Barletta Edit)
Dear Barletta: Your remix of this marginally catchy pop song annoyed the shit out of me. (But I guess that’s OK if people dance to it, right?…… Nah, fuck people!)
Thanks!
- Evan
12. Kanye West – Love Lockdown (So Am I Remix)
Dank, moody, ambient opener with vocoded R&B crooning; busts into some dirty, soulful, funky thumpin’ a la Daft Punk, or Mirwais. I am totally feeling this track! Very cool! But hey, I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for male vocoder vox on some techno-ballad action — Fond memories of BT’s “Somnambulist (Simply Being Loved)” jump to mind. A+ to So Am I (whoever that is).
13. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Zero (RAC Remix)
This funky, electro-pop remix by RAC is actually my favorite “Zero” remix to date, particularly with respect to actually fitting the original song and working with it, musically. The MSTRKRFT remix does the total opposite, burying the tune under mounds of muddy synth noise (and thus, it sucks). Still, I cannot seem to figure out why listeners and deejays are so blown away by this band — But whatever, I just sit back and say “Yeah, yeah, yeah… It’s not bad.”
Just my two cents.
Thanks, p33r0y!
lmao what is this? the “nUb Raver Tuesday #12 (Evan Exempt Bin-Bin de Remix)”?
Superb commentary, I must say! I’m always a sucker for RAC remixes – they always pick good, catchy indie pop/rock songs, even if some of their remixes fall a bit short.
The last few LAZRtag rmxs I’ve heard have been somewhat disappointing, but I like this one overall. I actually really like the Barletta edit of ‘Circus’ – lol it was the first track i uploaded for this edition, good thing i decided to use it as a bonus track
. HIs last few have been pretty good if you ask me.
I was feeling opinionated when I woke up this morning.
